What can I expect when I come to therapy?

Spending time getting to know you

It’s important to have a therapist that gets you. During the first session we talk about your goals for therapy and start to make a plan together. We also decide whether or not we are a good fit.

Throughout therapy we explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. We examine your context and your history. We name and recognize social factors that may impact you, including sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, and classism. I am an integrative therapist, which means I am trained in and utilize a variety of orientations and interventions. I am intentional with you and keep your context in mind when I choose an intervention or suggest a homework assignment.

Therapy is challenging- and that’s okay!

At times therapy can be difficult as we unpack patterns, look at your thoughts/feelings/behaviors, revisit painful memories, and work toward the changes you want to make. Change is rewarding and can also come with grief. You can expect that I will be with you every step of the way as you move toward the life you want to live.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL IT TAKE?

It depends! There are many factors that influence session numbers, including your presenting concerns, what you specifically are wanting to work on, and when you feel like therapy no longer needs to be in your self-care toolbox. You can expect that we will frequently have the discussion of how things are going for you in therapy, and when you feel like you have the tools to move forward without it.
